Braidwood Associates, a leading microsimulation traffic modelling specialist was appointed by California Center for Innovative Transport to undertake the development of a microsimulation traffic model for Interstate 880. The interstate is a major truck route and highly congested freeway.
The study are comprises of a 34-mile segment of the I-880 between Oakland and Militas, CA and included modelling 30 freeway interchanges including 5 major freeway-to-freeway interchanges, I 880/SR 237, I 880/SR 84, I 880/SR 92, I 880/ I 238 and I 880/ I 980.
The aim of the study was to develop a 2006 base year model of the highway infrastructure for Interstate 880, as part of the commute corridor within Oakland and Militas counties, to assist in the development of a corridor management plan (CSMP).
The AM and PM 3 hour modelled time periods were calibrated and validated to California State Department of Transport Guidelines of Microsimulation Traffic Modelling. Model calibration included link and turn traffic volumes, journey times and speed plots.
Matrix development involved matrix estimation for two trip matrices; cars and trucks to cover both modelled periods. The Alameda County regional travel demand model was utilized as the starting point for matrix development.
